Jakkalberry’s dominant broodmare sire – Barathea

Before the arrival of the Coolmore duo of Montjeu and Galileo, Barathea was, together with In The Wings, the most successful son of Sadler’s Wells at stud in Europe. The winner of the Breeders’ Cup Mile, the European Horse of the Year at Cartier Racing Awards, who produced impressive 81 black-type winners at stud, however, is even better as a damsire and this weekend proved to be a milestone for him in this role.

Three black-type races were run at Saint-Cloud on Sunday 19 March 2017, including the listed Prix Omnium II for three-year-old colts and geldings. The race was won easily, by two and half lengths from Yuman (Literato), by Markazi, bred by the Aga Khan, by Dark Angel and out of Barathea’s daughter Marasima. The runner up in the last year’s edition of the Prix de la Californie, Markazi achieved his first black-type victory and became the 82nd black-type winner out of a dam by Barathea. The latter thus not only confirmed his position of the most successful son of Sadler’s Wells among damsires, but even bettered the position which he achieved as a sire.

With 82 black-type winners out of his daughters, Barathea is the most successful damsire of all sons of Sadler’s Wells.

Barathea is a very successful damsire. His daughters have produced a total of twelve group winners, including Jakkalberry (Storming Home), Crackerjack King ( Shamardal) and Awelmarduk (Almutawakel) all out of Claba Di San Jore ,the Dubai World Cup winner Monterosso (Dubawi), the Yorkshire Oaks winner and the runner up in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Shareta (Sinndar), triple Gr.1 winner Hunter’s Light (Dubawi), the winner of the Juddmonte International Stakes Arabian Queen (Dubawi), the French classic winner Tie Black (Machiavellian), the winner of the Prix Maurice de Gheest King’s Apostle (King’s Best) or the winner of the Moyglare Stud Stakes Necklace (Darshaan).

Even a cursory look at the most successful progeny of Barathea’s daughters cannot miss three Gr.1 winners who have an identical sire – Dubawi. This connection has produced, so far, four black-type winners, out of whom three were successful in Gr.1 races. It must be noted though that Dubawi (together with Cape Cross) was given the biggest opportunity at stud with Barathea’s daughters and the share of black-type winners among their progeny by Dubawi is the same as the share of black-type winners in the whole Dubawi population.

Four black-type winners with Barathea’s daughters were produced by Monsun, three of them, however, are out of the same dam – the listed placed Kittiwake, half-sister to the King George and Champion Stakes winner Pentire.

Three more stallions produced three black-type winners with Barathea’s daughters, the rest two or just one. The very fact that 82 black-type winners out of his daughters were sired by a total of 61 stallions shows that the daughters of this sire can mate with a rather diverse group of stallions. Sixteen winners are by stallions from the Danehill line, which is hardly surprising in the case of Sadler’s Wells’s granddaughters but the fact that six, three of them successful in Gr. 1 races, are by Machiavellian and his sons, shows this connection in a new perspective. Both Danehill and Machiavellian are of the family of Northern Dancer’s dam Natalma, to whom all black-type winners from these combinations are inbred.

Barathea, who spent all his stud career at Rathbarry Stud, Ireland, and served as a shuttle stallion in Australia for four years, died eight years ago. The respected stallion meanwhile became even more respected damsire whose daughters, are capable to produce top horses with a wide spectrum of stallions.
