Katara (3 f ex Asyad by New Approach) became the late Deep Impact’s 159th worldwide stakes winner when bounding clear in the Chalice Stakes (Listed, 1m 4f) at Newmarket yesterday. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute and a homebred for Al Shaqab Racing from a distinguished German family, she is the first foal of a mare who was Group 2-placed for the same connections. Katara was off the mark at the third attempt in a novice race at Kempton a month ago and took this step up in class easily in her stride under Oisin Murphy, the hot favourite forging four lengths away from Expressionism (Galileo) and Cosmic Princess (Kingman). Novara Park's Staphanos is the only son of Deep Impact at stud in New Zealand for the 2020 season.
