Impending claims Strabroke in the Lonhro spirit

Sweynesse’s sire Lonhro added another top-level winner to his already enviable stud record when his son Impending landed the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben on Saturday.

Despite enduring a wide trip throughout under Corey Brown, the three-year-old Impending travelled smoothly and made steady headway as the 16-strong field approached the home turn, and when asked found plenty to get up close to the finish, seemingly scoring with something in hand.

Impending is trained by Darren Beadman, who has been installed as interim head trainer for Godolphin in Australia following John O'Shea's resignation.

In a neat twist of fate, this is not the first impact Beadman has had on Lonhro's career, having also been in the saddle for ten of his Group 1 successes during his racing career.

Lonhro was crowned champion three-year-old, champion miler and, at the conclusion of his five-year-old campaign, Horse of The Year. He won a remarkable 26 of his 35 starts, including no fewer than 11 Group 1s.

Lonhro’s 13 years at stud have yielded 66 black type winners, He was crowned Australian champion sire for the 2010-11 season and has consistently been a top ranked stallion in Australia. Lonhro set a new Australian record of 160 individual winners in a season. His son Pierro, unbeaten juvenile Triple Crown winner, was rated the best juvenile colt in Australia since 1977.

Sweynesse is the only son of the Champion racehorse and Sire Lonhro at stud in New Zealand.

Sweynesse is the highest rated stallion from the Zabeel sire line to begin stud duties in New Zealand since Savabeel.
