Contrail (Deep Impact) stretched his unbeaten record to seven as he became the eighth horse to land the Japanese Triple Crown when taking out yesterday’s Kikuka Sho (Gr 1) at Kyoto. The Yoshito Yahagi-trained colt scored under regular rider Yuichi Fukunaga as he beat Aristoteles (by Epiphaneia and out of a mare by Deep Impact) by a neck. Satono Flag, another son of Deep Impact finished a further three and a half lengths away in third with Deep Bond by Deep Impact in fourth. In claiming the Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger), to go with earlier victories in the Satsuki Sho (Gr 1, 2000m) and the Tokyo Yushun (Gr 1, 2400m), Contrail became only the third undefeated Triple Crown winner after Symboli Rudolf (Partholon) in 1984 and Deep Impact in 2005.
